Turning a Job Loss Into a Health Gain: My Journey Towards Wellness

I lost my job today.

Whoa. That feels strange to say.

I had a feeling this difficult and raw conversation with my boss was coming. Over the past few months, I’ve been experiencing repeated flare-ups of symptoms due to various suspected factors, such as inflammation, diet, hydration, and activity levels. Unfortunately, this had led me to take more sick days than I ever imagined since my diagnosis in May.

Despite this, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive an outpouring of grace and support from my workplace. The decision to step away from my role wasn’t made lightly; it was driven by a deep understanding and empathy. My boss suggested that I take an extended period of time off work to prioritize my health.

It’s been difficult. I’ve felt as though I was failing my colleagues, boss, clients and families, and even myself. I’ve been unable to dedicate my best efforts into my daily work activities and interventions as I struggle to manage the complexities of chronic pain. To be transparent, it’s felt like being on a sinking ship, playing a rigged carnival game, or being handed a bag of moldy, rotten lemons and told to make Chick-Fil-A Lemonade. Simply put, navigating my work life since my chronic pain began has been overwhelming.

In an effort to find a silver lining, I’ve decided to reframe this situation as a “health sabbatical“– a time dedicated to pursuing answers about my condition, scheduling and attending various medical appointments, fully engaging in treatment plans, and documenting my journey along the way here. Of course, I will likely be trying out a part-time or contract remote position as well, because, you know, bills!!!

One of my first steps will be seeking a second opinion, assessment, and treatment with the Mayo Clinic to rule out potential underlying conditions, such as autoimmune diseases.

Though the journey ahead is dimly lit at the moment, I’m determined to make the most of this break from work. My focus will now be dedicated to reclaiming my health and well-being. I’m committed to exploring various avenues for treatment, embracing new habits, and making lifestyle changes that might finally bring relief.

This period of time won’t be easy, but I’m going to face it head-on. There will be challenges, setbacks, and tough days ahead, but I’m hopeful that this time will also bring clarity, healing and maybe even a sense of empowerment.

As I embark on this “health sabbatical,” I invite you to follow along with my journey as I share my experiences, insights, and the ups and downs of navigating life with chronic pain.

  • What treatment options, lifestyle changes, or habits do you suggest I trial to help manage chronic pain?
